Pre-season: Feb 1, 2024 – May 2024. 5-10 hrs/week at $20.00/hr.
Onsite: May 2024 – August 31, 2024. $350.00/day + meals and accommodation.
Overview
At Easter Seals Ontario, we provide overnight camping opportunities for kids and young adults with physical disabilities. Each summer we welcome staff from all over the world and pride ourselves on providing an awesome pre-camp training, so our staff are equipped with all the skills they need to give our campers a great experience. Our camps make many traditional summer camp activities accessible and inclusive, such as swimming, boating, archery, high ropes, and more! Reporting to the Senior Manager of Recreation and Facilities and working in tandem with the Counselling Director, the Healthcare Director is responsible for the overall well-being of campers, staff, and volunteers, including the review of all camper applications to determine eligibility to attend an Easter Seals overnight camp program. The Healthcare Director is responsible for supervising, scheduling, and supporting a team of 6-8 healthcare providers, including RNs, PSWs, and Healthcare Assistants (nursing students). The Healthcare Director monitors and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and best practices as defined by the CNO and outlined in the Healthcare Manual and the Camper Care Manual.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
Personal Care Oversight:
- Collaborate closely with the Counseling Director to oversee personal care.
- Conduct daily huddles with the Counseling Director, PSWs, and Counselors to ensure the fulfillment of personal care needs and safety requirements.
- Ensure relevant medical information required for providing personal care is communicated to PSWs and Counselors before camper Arrival Day.
Nursing Care Oversight:
- Supervise a team of Camp Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, and Nursing Students.
- Provide nursing care to campers and staff during overnight and day camp sessions.
- Collaborate with Camp Nurses to address the healthcare needs of campers and staff.
- Follow Easter Seals policies/procedures as outlined in the Healthcare Manual, Camper Care Manual, Leadership Manual, and Camp Resource Manual.
- Familiarize yourself with the Ontario Camping Association standards and CNO guidelines for healthcare in recreational camping settings.
Resource Management:
- Organize, maintain, and allocate adequate resources to meet the health care needs of campers and staff.
- Set-up the camp Health Center.
- Manage inventory and order all necessary supplies and equipment for the Health Center.
- Oversee the Healthcare budget.
- Develop and manage schedules for Camp Nurses and Healthcare Assistants.
Nursing Documentation and Communication:
- Maintain accurate and detailed nursing documentation following the College of Nurses of Ontario documentation standards.
- Communicate with parents, ensuring staff and camper health reports are up-to-date and on file.
- Prepare and maintain daily medication and treatment records.
- Complete and file accident report forms.
- Ensure all documentation is securely stored.
- Contact parents regarding their child’s health status.
First Aid and Safety:
- Supervise First Aid procedures and supplies.
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp, including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, and activity areas.
- Ensure supplies are well-stocked and distributed as needed.
- Lead sessions during pre-camp, educating staff and campers on their roles in camper care and first aid.
- Facilitate staff training on specific care for various disabilities.
- Play a lead role in assessing and updating the camp’s overall risk management plan.
- Provide staff orientation covering camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention, risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
- Share responsibility for planning, implementing, and overseeing an inclusive, anti-oppressive, camper-focused camp program and culture.
Health Screening and Safety Observations:
- Screen all campers and staff upon arrival and departure.
- Verify health history and examination records.
- Identify observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases, including Covid-19.
- Conduct health assessments.
- Securely store all medications used by campers and staff in the Health Center.
- Supervise sanitary conditions throughout the camp.
- Monitor daily cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas.
- Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Senior Manager of Recreation and Facilities.
Other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager of Recreation and Facilities.
Physical Aspects of the Job
- Ability to communicate and work as a team leader.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and staff.
- Able to manage lifting, some bending, stooping, and stretching as well as daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
- Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain.
- Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
- Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper and staff health concerns
Minimum Requirements
Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse holding current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Previous leadership and supervisory experience required. Professional liability insurance through the RNAO/RPNAO and current First Aid/BLS certification. Paediatric and/or camping experience an asset. Must be comfortable managing schedules, have strong communication skills, the ability to teach/train staff during pre-camp and enforce care standards during session. Willingness to manage Healthcare in a semi-rural setting that necessitates information being captured in both digital and paper formats.
Other Considerations
- Work part-time offsite from January – May and full-time onsite from May – August.
- Easter Seals Ontario camps are fully accessible and provide camping experiences to kids and young adults with disabilities.
- It is required that all staff be fully vaccinated against Covid19 and follow the health and safety recommendations provided by Provincial and Regional Health Units.
- Should be capable of lifting and transferring 15 – 25 kgs in a safe manner.
- Onsite housing (shared) provided for camping season; meals provided during camp sessions.
- June – August eight-day work period, 24 hours/day on call with scheduled breaks throughout the day and three days off between sessions.
